The Cannon has learned that today’s closure of St. George Street from Harbord Street to College Street was caused by a death at the site of the CEIE building. Director Mark Pugash of Toronto Police stated in a phone call to The Cannon that a man in his 30s died today after equipment from a crane fell on him while working in the elevator shaft. He was declared on the scene by paramedics, with no report of vital signs. His identity has not been released by Toronto Police and his significant other has been notified. Toronto Police has also reported a second worker has been injured in the same incident, and was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Scott Mabury, Vice-President of Operations has given a brief statement of the death. “This is something we never want to see happen on our campuses, and our deepest sympathies go out to those affected.” The Ministry of Labour with cooperation from the contractor and the university is currently conducting an investigation of the site.
